Connecticut Driving Rules to Keep in Mind This Winter

posted on

Part of staying safe on the road means being prepared for the winter months. When the temperature drops and the snow starts to fall, common sense and precaution are part of keeping you and your vehicle safe. The state of Connecticut has compiled winter driving tips for motorists who must travel when inclement weather hits.

Keep Your Windshield Free of Obstructions

It may seem obvious, but in the rush to get to where we need to be, we often overlook cleaning our windshields thoroughly. If you can't see out the windows, you're a danger to yourself and everyone around you. The same goes for the top of your vehicle. Be sure to clean off any snow that can easily blow off and hit another driving car, which can lead to serious accidents. In the state of Connecticut, you can be fined $75 under the “Ice Missile Law” for failing to properly clean off your vehicle.

Make Sure Defrosters Are In Working Condition

Be sure that your heater is functioning properly and that plenty of warm air is being directed to the windshield when it needs to be defrosted. This plays a big part in ensuring maximum visibility and makes ice removal easier.

Stick To Main Roads

State and county main roads tend to get cleaned and sanded first, which is why you should stick to these if travel is a must.

Maintain Your Car For Optimal Performance

Keeping your car maintained is not only good for the life of your vehicle, it helps it perform better when driving conditions are impacted by weather. Make sure you keep your oil changed, inspect your wiper blades for wear and tear, and be sure to keep your brakes and rotors in check. Don’t forget to also check your tires regularly. Cold weather can decrease the air in your tires, so be sure to have them balanced and properly filled. When it comes to tires, don’t bother with chains or studs. Connecticut law dictates that these are reserved for authorized emergency vehicles. Snow tires are a wise investment for the winter months if they are compliant and safe.

Winter weather is just beginning in the Northeast and there is still time for you to prepare your vehicle for winter driving conditions. Don’t delay before the next storm in Connecticut.
