How Often Should You Get Your Oil Changed?

Going in for regular oil changes is one of the most important routine tasks when it comes to owning a car. No matter how old or new your car is, oil changes replace old, dirty oil that’s run through the motor for some time and replaces it with new lubricant to ensure your motor and it's internal components continues to run clean and smooth.

What is An Oil Change?

Whether you bring your car to an auto repair shop for the service or prefer to get under the hood and do it yourself, the process is the same. The drain screw is removed from the bottom of the oil pan and old oil is collected into a disposal container. Once it is completely drained, the screw is put back in place and new oil is added from the top. Often times the filter is also replaced during this process.

Why Do You Need Regular Oil Changes?

You might simply wait for the oil indicator to appear in your dash before you drive it to the repair shop for service. Perhaps you pay attention to the date and mileage on the sticker the last service shop placed on your windshield. Whatever your method, it’s important to never forget this step or you could cause serious issues to the engine of your car. Without an engine, your car becomes just a solid brick that will not move anywhere.

How Frequent Should You Change Your Car’s Oil?

Most dealerships today recommend that a car have it’s oil changed before reaching 5,000 miles. Today’s engines and oils are burning more efficiently, so the traditional 3,000 miles has been lengthened a bit. However, be warned, these conditions can change. If your car has high miles or other issues that could be causing the oil to burn faster than normal, it also means getting services more frequently. The only way to know for sure is to check the oil yourself using the dip stick and a clean napkin. When the car is cooled, dip it into the oil reservoir and then wipe the dipstick on a clean napkin. The levels and color of the oil can be seen using this method. As well, you’ll want to bring it to a trusted auto repair shop where complete diagnostics of the car and motor health can be done. This in-depth knowledge of the car you’re relying on to get you around each day is the difference between getting you from point A to point B or getting stranded on the road with a clanking motor than won’t turn over.
