Extreme Cold Temps and COVID-19 Shut Downs Put Cars at Greater Risk

This winter season has been an extremely harsh one for the entire U.S. From first-time snowfalls in Texas to freezing temps in much of the Northeast, there is a lot to endure especially when considering were also still pushing through a global pandemic.

In addition to keeping your home warm and toasty and social distancing, it is important to pay attention to your vehicle. AAA is reminding drivers that both the cold and the reduced use of our cars can have a negative impact on the performance and longevity of its components.

One of the major issues creating this warning is that cars have been sitting idle more than ever. This can lead to skipping preventative maintenance appointments since you haven’t reached the miles indicated on the window sticker or overlooking something like tire rotation schedules. All of these factors could contribute to drivers being left stranded on the roadway or even seeing an increase in repair bills over time.

So what should you do?

First, don’t put off routine checks and maintenance for your car – even if it’s being driven less. Other components to have checked are the battery, fluids, and tires. You need a battery that will work even in cold temps and won’t go dead on you during a cold morning. A simple charge test can reveal the battery strength.

Safe driving requires tires to be properly inflated to the correct Psi and good tread. Have your tires checked to ensure they are not worn too low or if you see the tire pressure indicator on, don’t ignore it.

Other important fluids should also be checked and topped off regularly. Coolant which helps the engine perform properly, washer fluid to clean your window, and motor oil are all very important for a smooth and safe ride.

Take your car over to Tire Country of Enfield where we can help you rest assured everything is in working order as you head back to work, or out for your summer travels.
