Tire Care Basics: Signs That Your Vehicle Needs New Tires

Tires are responsible for keeping your car safely on the road. Even though tires are critically important, many vehicle owners don’t monitor their condition frequently and replace them when they’re worn. Here are some things you should do on a regular basis to maintain your tires and ways to know that it’s time to replace them.

Check Your Tire Pressure

Keeping your tires inflated to the appropriate pressure is essential. If your tires are over-or underinflated, the car may pull to one side, or you may feel a vibration while you’re driving. In rainy, snowy, or icy conditions, you may lose control of the vehicle and get into an accident that can seriously injure you and others.

Check the pressure in your tires at least once a month. It’s best to do it before you go anywhere. When you drive, the tires get warmer, which can affect the pressure and give you an inaccurate reading.

There should be a sticker inside the driver’s door that specifies the recommended tire pressure. You can also find that information in the owner’s manual. If the tires aren’t at the appropriate pressure, use a pump at your home, if you have one, or take the car to a gas station to inflate the tires. Use a gauge to check the pressure until it’s at the level where it should be. Remember to check your spare tire, too.

Check the Treads in Your Tires

If your tires’ treads get worn down too low, you can lose traction. You might not notice a problem in dry weather, but you might find it difficult to control the car if it’s raining or snowing.

Insert a quarter into a tire’s tread with George Washington’s head pointing down. If the tread extends at least to the top of the head, the tire is fine. If the tread is even with the top of the head, the tires are ok for now, but you’ll have to replace them relatively soon. If the tread is below the head, you should replace the tires as soon as possible.
