3 Bad Habits That Can Destroy Your Car

Anyone who enjoys the freedom and luxury that goes along with owning a car knows that keeping your ride working well and dependable is important. Not only are repair costs something you want to avoid but due to the current economic climate and inflation, paying attention to your vehicle’s condition can save you a lot in the long run.

Here are 3 things you should stop doing right away. The bad habits detailed below may be things you don’t even realize you’re doing, or that you’ve never been told can ruin your car – but they can. So pay attention, take notes and drive safe!

1. Riding on Your Brakes – Especially Down a Hill

Your need the brakes on your car so you can stop as needed on the road. The problem is they can wear out prematurely if you’re always riding them when you drive. Keeping your foot hovered over or lightly tapping on the brake it will build up heat in the brake pads and rotors and cause them to wear and warp. This is especially true when driving downhill and is something many drivers tend to do. It’s a bad habit you want to stop. Instead drive slowly, defensively, and prepare to stop in advance of when you actually need to save your brakes.

2. Running Your Gas Tank to Empty All the Time

Rising fuel costs make this an especially sensitive topic right now, but it cannot go ignored. If you cannot fill your gas tank and only put in $10-$20 at a time, you may realize your running out of gas frequently. The problem comes when you decide to keep driving well past the gas light indicator. Over time this can wreak havoc on your fuel system. First, the fuel pump cannot stay cool because it’s not submerged in the fuel tank and drawing from the very bottom of the tank means sediments that have settled from the gasoline are bring pulled into the lines - even possibly getting into your engine which can destroy your car.

3. Ignoring the Tire Pressure Warning Light

Most new cars come with a handy sensor on their tires to help drivers know when the pressure settings are off. While this is so much more convenient than older cars when you had to periodically check the pressure manually or look for low air, many drivers still ignore the dash light and this can lead to issues. Properly inflated tires give you the best fuel economy (and we all need that these days!) They also ensure that the tire treads are wearing evenly so you won’t need new tires sooner than expected and they protect you from hazardous conditions on the road.

Making sure your tires are properly inflated is crucial for making sure your car is getting the best fuel economy, otherwise you might be spending more at the pump than you need to be. Proper inflation will also make sure your tires are wearing evenly which will make them last longer.
