Is Your Tire Leaking? Here’s What to Do

It’s easy to overlook a slow leak until it becomes a major problem. You might think your tires are fine, then notice that one of them is going flat. Refilling the tire can resolve the issue temporarily, but you might soon realize that the tire is leaking again. If you find yourself in that situation, here are some ways to find and deal with the leak.

Inspect the Tire

You might be able to identify the source of the leak simply by looking at the tire. You might discover a nail stuck in it or see a hole that was left behind when you drove over some sort of sharp object.

If a visual inspection doesn’t reveal any damage, try pressing on the tire. You might feel or hear air escaping when you press on a particular area.

If you still can’t find the leak, try mixing together soap and water and spraying it all over the tire. If you see bubbles, you’ll know that’s where the tire is leaking. You can also remove the tire from the car, place it in a large container filled with water, and look for bubbles.

The tire itself might not be the source of the problem. Check the valve stem, too. If it’s damaged, that can explain why your tire is leaking air. It’s also possible that the wheel got damaged when you ran over a pothole or that the tire isn’t seated securely against the wheel.

How to Deal with a Leaky Tire

The location of the leak will determine how you should handle it. In some cases, you’ll be able to fill a hole yourself. Another option is to take the car to a tire shop or a mechanic for professional repairs. If there’s a large hole or the leak is in the tire’s shoulder or sidewall, you’ll need to replace the tire. A damaged wheel is another issue that you’ll want to have a professional handle.
