How Much Money Does Preventative Car Maintenance Save?

posted on

When it comes to car maintenance, there are two basic approaches you can take:

  1.        Be proactive and invest in preventative maintenance
  2.        Wait until something’s a problem before having it fixed

Just about everyone knows that preventative maintenance is the better option in the long-run, but far too many drivers take approach #2. In fact, according to the National Car Care Council, as much as 85% of cars on the road are in need of maintenance or repair.

This isn’t just dangerous—failing to properly maintain tires, for instance, increases the likelihood of a blowout on the highway—it costs a lot more money.

But just how much money does the average driver save by investing in proactive, preventative maintenance on their vehicle? The answer will vary for each person depending on make and model, driving habits, and other factors, but here are some facts to consider.

Gas Savings

According to Modern Tire Dealer, regular preventative maintenance can help save a bundle on gas. Consider:

- Properly tuned cars see a 4% improvement in gas mileage.
- Properly inflated tires improve mileage by 3.3%.
- Regularly replacing air filters can improve mileage by up to 10%.
- More serious problems can adversely affect gas mileage by as much as 40%, according to Exxon.

Assuming 15,000 miles driven per year at 20 miles and $2.50 per gallon, the savings from preventative maintenance can add up to between $324 and $1,000 per year in gas alone.

Maintenance vs. Replacement

Preventative maintenance can be a significant investment, but there’s no denying that it keeps a car on the road for much longer than a break/fix mentality.

According to AAA, it costs an average of $766.50 per year to maintain a vehicle, including oil changes, tire rotation, and other services. If you own your car outright, that number along with gas, insurance, licensing, and taxes adds up to the total cost of vehicle ownership.

Buying a new car, however, will had a monthly payment and financing to the mix, which can total in the thousands of dollars per year. That’s to say nothing of the down payment you’ll need to come up with up front. Nerd Wallet estimates the average monthly used car payment at $365, and $500 for new cars—that’s between $4,000 and $6,000 yearly!)

All things considered, prolonging the lifespan of your vehicles through regular maintenance will add up to significant cost savings when compared to buying and financing more new ones over the course of your life.
