Best Scenic Drives to Witness Winter Beauty in Connecticut

posted on

Winter in Connecticut is magical. At least when it comes to the scenic views that a fresh coat of white snow brings. Sure it can get cold, and sometimes the inability to travel because of road conditions can add difficulty, but overall the state has some truly breathtaking views of nature from just about anywhere around the state.

We’re certainly not suggesting heading out when there’s a snowstorm, or even before the roads have had time to be cleaned and are safe again for cars to travel, but there is an optimal window of time when the snow is just starting to melt and the roads are accessible again that you should plan a weekend drive to witness some truly magical winter beauty.

Here are some places you’ll want to see this winter in Connecticut.

Old Wethersfield

One of the oldest villages in Connecticut, Old Wethersfield, is the perfect place to check out winter scenery from a historical view. The town’s buildings date back to 1850 and the friendly and welcoming atmosphere makes it a great place to stop, take a stroll, and feel like you’ve stepped right into a picture perfect scene from an old post card.

Litchfield County

As the largest county in the state and with a low population density, enjoying nature in the Litchfield area is easy. Take a drive through while letting the windows down a bit and smelling the fresh, crisp winter air as you enjoy the snow glistening and picturesque scenery brought by the Northwest Hills.

Merritt Parkway

Originally designed as a scenic byway, the Merritt Parkway is a must travel to view winter’s beauty from the car. The Fairfield Country stretch of the historic road is a great place for a passenger to snap some magnificent photos of the historic architecture with snow-coated forests as the backdrop.

CT River Valley

Taking a drive up and through the CT River Valley will also offer a stupendous view of winter’s beauty in Connecticut. From a snow covered view of the Connecticut River, to a chance to ride the North Pole Express via the Essex Steam Train and stopping to pick up a few trinkets at Old Mystic Seaport.

If you’re going to be hitting the road when it’s safe again this winter to catch some of these views, you’ll want to be sure your car has good tires and that your brakes are working and fluids are filled.
