3 Scenic Drives That Will Make You Appreciate Connecticut in the Spring

posted on

Why do you maintain a car? Is it to get to work or school? While that may be the case, spring is an important time to remember that we also keep cars for enjoyment.

After a long, cold winter it’s a good idea to reconnect with nature and use your car for something other than duty and humdrum errands.

Check out these top 3 scenic CT drives to do this spring!

New England Spring

Connecticut is beautiful in all seasons, but it truly comes to life in the spring when nature returns for another season of bounty. Following are three of the nicest drives in Connecticut that will enable you to appreciate the beauty of the spring and rolling hills, town greens, covered bridges, coastal wetlands and farms…not just the misery of hay fever season.

The Litchfield Hills. This tour begins in Goshen (Rtes. 63 and 4), noted for its rolling hills and farms. Route 4 west from the center of town will take you past Miranda Vineyard. To visit Sunset Meadow Vineyards, overlooking the Western Connecticut Highlands, take Route 63 south. Route 4 west will bring you past Tyler Lake and the beautiful village of West Cornwall, which has a covered bridge.

Continue on Route 7 north on a scenic road through Housatonic State Forest. At routes 7 and 126, take Route 7 north toward Falls Village with its beautiful architecture. Route 44 west will lead you to the pretty villages of Canaan and Salisbury, and Route 4 east will bring you to Goshen past Mohawk State Forest.

State Route 169. Connecticut State Route 169 is a peaceful road through quiet villages, scenic woodlands, and quaint farmsteads amid rivers and rolling hills of the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor. Travelers pass postcard-perfect small towns and Colonial-era buildings and farms enhanced by spring blossoming.

Stop for a visit at Mashamoquet Brook State Park in the town of Pomfret.

A Scenic Coastal Drive. Connecticut has a beautiful sea coast, and a drive from Stonington, Connecticut in the northeast to Greenwich in the southwest (or vice versa) will help you to appreciate it. The drive follows Connecticut’s coastline and passes through many beautiful villages, salt marshes, woodlands and beaches. Stop in New Haven to view its historic buildings or climb to the top of Five Mile Point Lighthouse at Lighthouse Point Park. Consider stopping at one of Connecticut’s many unique “seafood dives” for lunch or dinner.
