Follow the Recommended Service Schedule to Get the Most from Your Vehicle

People often buy their cars – either new or pre-owned – from dealerships far away from their homes. Whether it was for a desire for a specific car that was hard to find or the result of a move after the car purchase, vehicle owners often dread the thought of having to trek back to the dealerships to get their vehicles serviced.

It’s important to remember, however, that it’s not carved in stone that you must have your vehicle serviced at the dealership where you bought it. But you DO need to stick with the recommended service schedule to prolong the life of your vehicle.

Why is Regular Maintenance So Important?

Regular maintenance allows you to guard against major repairs that could have been avoided, as well as unexpected failures that could endanger you or your family. Proper vehicle maintenance can save you money in the long run for more extensive repair. Neglecting suggested regular vehicle service can even void your vehicle and parts warranties.

The most important services to seek on a regular basis for your vehicle include:

Oil changes. Oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle, and checking and changing your oil and oil filter regularly will help your engine and vehicle run smoothly. Changing it regularly AND using the right type of oil can improve gas mileage by one to two percent.

Brake fluid changes. Brake fluid can attract moisture, which will corrode components. Brake fluid should be replaced once a year to keep calipers, hoses, and other components in top operating condition.

Transmission and differential fluid. If your vehicle is making any unusual noises, is sluggish in shifting or gear changes, it may mean that your transmission service interval is quickly approaching or has passed.

Tires and wheel alignments. Particularly after a rough winter, it’s a good idea to have your tires checked and rotated, and your alignment evaluated. Wheel alignments improve straight-line tracking and reduce tire wear.

Climate control. Ensure your vehicle’s heating and air conditioning are running at optimal health, particularly in the fall (for heating) and the spring (for AC).

Stay on top of routine vehicle maintenance and visit a good auto repair specialist – it need not be the dealership where you purchased the vehicle. Do this on a regular basis, according to your vehicle manufacturer’s guideline.
