3 Summer Tips For Proper Tire Care

3 Summer Tips For Proper Tire Care

If you haven’t been inspecting your tires during the winter, don’t worry--we’ve been there. After all, who wants to stare at their tires during sub zero weather? So, even if you did neglect your tires all winter, don’t sweat it; you can do it soon, during the summer. Take advantage of the warm weather and extra sunlight while you still can. Do yourself a favor and take care of your tires by following these 3 essential tips.

1. Maintain Proper Tire Pressure

Most of us are guilty of only checking our tire pressure when we see the the icon appear on our dashboard. Ideally, you should check your tire pressure at least once a month.

How to check your tire pressure

You can find your tire’s recommended psi in your driver-side door jamb. The optimal pressure for most tires meant for sedans is 33 - 40 psi. Once you know the recommended psi for your car, use a tire gauge to check the current psi of all 4 of your tires. If none are flat, fill your tires with air at a gas station. Most gas stations offer air for free. If you’re lucky, you might find a gas station with an electric air pump. Unlike a typical gauge attachment, electric pumps will let out an audible “beep” when your tire reaches its target psi.

2. Rotate Your Tires

You’ve probably heard this from every gearhead you’ve ever talked to. Your tires will last longer if they wear evenly. So, consistent tire rotations are especially important for FWD vehicles. If your front 2 tires are taking the blunt of gravel roads, potholes, and snow, swapping them with your rear tires will ensure that both sets get worked equally.

3. Do The ‘Penny Test’ To Check For Extreme Wear

Naturally, you’ll want to check for leaks and tears, but if you’ve head these tires for a long time, it’s important to decide whether it’s time to replace them altogether. Figuring this out isn’t difficult. In fact, all you’ll need is a penny. Place the penny on the tread grove of the tire face-down. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head (meaning that it’s not ‘submerged’ at all), then it’s time for new tires.
