Car Pulling to the Side? You May Need an Alignment

posted on

Most people who drive cars use them as transportation to and from locations. Depending on how old a car is and several other factors, they may also schedule regular maintenance at shop, or wait for an issue to arise to bring it to a garage. The problem with this is there are things that you may not realize are an issue and avoid them until it’s too late.

The wheels that drive your car forward don’t just need to spin and stop, they also need to drive you straight ahead. If your car is pulling off to the side as you drive, there could be an alignment issue that should be checked. This is one of the more obvious indicators of an alignment issue. Here are some other things that mean it’s time to have an alignment done on your car.

Uneven Tire Wear

If you’re standing outside of your vehicle and see that the tread on one of your tires is much more worn than the others, this too could signal an issue with your wheel alignment. Also known as “camber” this refers to the positioning of your wheels on an inward (positive camber) or outward (negative camber) tilt and will affect how your tire tread is consumed. Obviously the area making most impact with the road will wear away faster than the rest. In cars with significant camber, it’s easy to go through a brand new set of tires in a very short amount of time if there is camber since the car is relying on that edge of the tire as it drives around.

Steering Problems

In addition to wear and tear of your tires, a bad car alignment can also affect your steering abilities while in the car. Thanks to power steering, most drivers don’t realize the amount of force it takes to get a car to turn or stay straight, but if you’re alignment is off, you will realize it quickly as your car struggles to drive straight ahead without some work on your part to center it. These issues can sprout up after hitting a giant pothole, or sometimes even just a small bump along the roadway can set alignment off. If you’re experiencing anything like this there could also be other steering components that need replacing so it’s best to get it into the shop soon. And with winter weather fast approaching in Connecticut, you don’t want to wait until it’s too late to do so.
