Winter Tires 101

Winter Tires 101

In Connecticut, winter temperatures are typically below freezing, and snow often blankets the state. These conditions can make driving hazardous, which is why having the right tires is essential.

How Are All-Season Tires and Snow Tires Different?

All-season tires provide good performance in a variety of conditions, but they don’t perform as well as snow tires in extreme conditions. The rubber used in all-season tires starts to harden when the temperature gets below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, which reduces the tires’ traction.

Winter tires are manufactured with softer rubber that can stay pliable in lower temperatures and can provide better traction. Winter tires have also many sipes, or small cuts, that help them grip the road in snowy and icy conditions.

If you choose to get snow tires, they should be installed on all four wheels, not just two. Stud-less snow tires can provide good traction in snowy, icy, and slushy conditions, as well as when roads are wet from melted snow. They can also be used when the ground is clear and dry.

How to Stay Safe When Driving in the Winter

Take your vehicle to a mechanic for a thorough inspection before winter arrives. Have any necessary repairs made so you don’t get stuck.

Create an emergency kit with food; water; blankets; sand, salt, or cat litter for traction; a shovel; an ice scraper; tow rope; tools; jumper cables; a flashlight and extra batteries; flares; matches; a first-aid kit; and a phone charger. Always have at least a half tank of gas so you don’t run out and get stranded. Check your tire pressure regularly, since cold temperatures can cause pressure fluctuations.

Before you head out in the winter, check the weather forecast. If you are planning a lengthy trip, check the forecast at your destination and at points along the way. If a storm is predicted, consider postponing your trip.

If you decide to go ahead with your plans, tell someone where you are going, the route you plan to take, and when you expect to arrive. If you don’t show up when you are expected, someone can look for you or alert the authorities.

Stay on well-traveled roads as much as possible, especially if the forecast calls for inclement weather. Main roads will be plowed more often than secondary roads, and there will be more drivers who can help if you get into an accident.

When driving, leave more space than you typically would between your car and the one in front of you in case the road gets slippery and you have trouble stopping. If you need to turn, brake gradually, complete the turn and then accelerate.
