How to Change a Car Battery

How to Change a Car Battery

Car batteries typically wear out after a few years. If your battery has died, or if it is nearing the end of its lifespan, you can replace it yourself. The job is easy to do if you know-how.

Safety Precautions

When you work with a car battery, wear gloves and eye protection. Don’t allow a wrench or any other metal object to come into contact with both of the battery posts at the same time. Don’t allow the wrench to touch the car’s body or fender while it is in contact with the positive terminal.

How to Replace Your Battery

If you have never changed your car’s battery before and aren’t sure where it is located, check the owner’s manual. Some vehicle manufacturers put the battery under the floor, in the trunk, or in another location.

Look for the positive post. It may have a red cover or a red cable, and there should also be a “+” sign on the battery near the positive post.

Use a wrench to loosen the nut or bolt attaching the negative terminal and cable to the negative post on the battery. Remove the cable and terminal from the negative battery post, then repeat with the positive terminal.

Remove the clamp or retaining system that secures the battery. Put the parts or fasteners in a safe place and carefully remove the battery.

Check the condition of the terminals at the ends of the battery cable. If they are dirty or corroded, clean them with a tool designed for that purpose. Cleaning the posts and clamps will provide a good connection to the battery.

Line up the battery’s red post with the positive terminal and cable. Insert the battery and use the clamp or retaining system to hold it in place. Remove the plastic caps from the battery posts and place anti-corrosion washers over them.

Before you connect the positive terminal to the positive post, spread a thin layer of grease on the battery posts and terminals to prevent corrosion that could keep the battery from charging. Tighten the positive connector with the wrench, then repeat with the negative post and terminal. Check to make sure the battery is secure and tighten the clamps or retaining system if necessary.
