Get Your Vehicle Ready for 2020’s Harsh Winter Forecast

Taking care of your car can improve its gas mileage, help you avoid a breakdown, and possibly help you get more miles and more years of good performance. The weather has already started to turn cool in Connecticut, and snowy winter days will be here soon. Now is the time to make sure that your vehicle is prepared for the months ahead.

Things to Check and Replace Before Winter

OIL: You should change the oil in your vehicle as the manufacturer recommends. Note that you might have to replace the oil more frequently if you drive in harsh conditions or stop-and-go traffic. During the winter, you should use oil with less viscosity. A mechanic can inspect your car’s engine for any signs of a problem.

BATTERY: A mechanic should test your battery and the posts and connections. If the battery is weak, it may be time to replace it.

ANTIFREEZE: Antifreeze can prevent your engine from freezing if the temperature dips low. You can check your antifreeze level and add more, if necessary. A mechanic should inspect the belts, clamps, and hoses for damage.

GAS: A frozen gas line in the winter can lead to serious problems. Putting de-icer in your gas tank can help you avoid that situation.

EXHAUST: A mechanic should check the exhaust system for any evidence of a leak. If a leak is found, it should be repaired.

TIRES: Worn tires can make it difficult to get traction in slippery road conditions. Check your tires for signs of tread wear and cupping. During the winter, you should check the pressure frequently and add air when necessary. A mechanic can rotate the tires and check the wheel alignment when you take your car in for service. If you frequently have to drive in snowy conditions, you may want to get new snow tires.

WIPERS: Sand and salt on the roads can create a mess on your windshield. If your wiper blades aren’t in good condition, replace them. Also, make sure that you have enough windshield washer fluid. A formula specifically designed for winter won’t freeze on your windshield the way fluid used at other times of the year can.

HEATER: A mechanic should inspect your vehicle’s heater and defroster to make sure they’re working as they should. Your air and fuel filters should be replaced, and your cabin air filter may need to be changed, too.
