Top 4 Most Common Car Problems and What to Do about Them

Anyone who drives a car knows how comforting it is to have a vehicle you can depend on to get you where you’re going. While there are so many advantages and freedoms having a car provides, there’s also the fact to upkeep and having to fix issues over time is inevitable.

Here are some of the most common problems that can come up with a car and what you should do about them.

1. Car won’t start

The first thing you want to do is check the battery to see if it is dead. Most likely if you are turning the key in the ignition and there are no lights in the dash or the radio doesn’t come on, the battery being dead could be the source of your problem.

Is there gas? Sometimes a faulty gas gauge or just forgetting to pay attention to the level of your gas tank can leave you with a car that doesn’t start. If this happens, take a gas can to the gas station and try adding some to the tank and turning it on.

2.Flat tire

Whether you’re driving along the road and all of a sudden hear the tire blow out or if there was a slow leak you had no idea about and then you notice the car is pulling to the side as you drive, a flat tire or severely low tire could be the problem. If it’s not obviously flat or blown then you’ll need to take it to a tire shop to have it inspected for holes, patched up and filled. Or if it is flat a new tire might be the only solution. Either way, addressing this problem immediately is important for your safety on the road.

3. Headlights or Brake Light Bulbs are Out

Headlights help you to see and other drivers on the road to spot you too so they are important. If your bulb is out you may be able to handle the job yourself. Open the hood or trunk and see if you can safely twist and remove it then bring it to an auto store to get an exact replacement. Brake lights warn those traveling behind you that you are coming to a stop. They must be fully functioning at all times.  Do a check every once a while with someone behind your car to ensure that when you apply your brakes the light actually comes on.

4.Brake Squeal or Grind

If it sounds like nails on a chalkboard when your car is coming to a stop chances are you need new brakes. Sometimes the sound is more like gurgling, either way, this audible warning is the only sign you need to know that there is an issue with the stopping mechanism on your car. Get your brakes checked and changed immediately by taking it to a repair shop you can trust.
