COVID-19 Update: How to Sanitize Your Vehicle

Although COVID-19 is mainly transmitted via respiratory droplets, the virus can survive on surfaces for a period of time. It can spread when someone touches an infected surface and then touches his or her mouth, nose, or eyes.

Washing your hands and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces can reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus. You and other members of your family probably use your vehicle often and touch the same surfaces. Here are some simple steps to sanitize your vehicle and help to protect you and your loved ones from the coronavirus.

How to Clean Your Car’s Interior

Start by thoroughly vacuuming the inside of your vehicle. Getting rid of any loose debris will make it easier to disinfect surfaces. If you have any products that are specifically designed for the vehicle that you regularly use to clean it, you can use them to remove dirt and then sanitize surfaces later.

When disinfecting surfaces in your car that you and your passengers touch often, be mindful of the products you use. Disinfecting wipes might work well on kitchen counters and other household surfaces, but they could damage some materials in your car.

Most interior surfaces in a vehicle, including cloth upholstery, can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. You can also use dish soap and water to sanitize your car and reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Don’t use bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or cleaners with ammonia inside your vehicle because they can damage surfaces.

Friction from the cleaning process can help to disinfect your car. A microfiber cloth can do a good job of cleaning without scratching surfaces.

If you decide to disinfect your car with dish soap and water, you can use hot or cold water. Soak the cloth in the soapy water and wring it out before you begin wiping down surfaces.

Thoroughly disinfect all the areas that you and your passengers frequently touch. Those include the steering wheel, radio, seatbelts, cup holders, center console, glove box, and door handles.

How to Clean Upholstery

If your car has fabric upholstery, don’t use too much soap or water because that could leave behind a lot of suds, allow mold to grow, or produce a musty odor. You can use soap and water on old leather, but don’t scrub too hard. It’s ok to clean leather occasionally with alcohol, but it can cause damage and discoloration over time. After you clean leather in your car, use a leather conditioner.
