Connecticut Scenic Drives: The Best Road Trips and Day Trips in CT

posted on

A bridge on the Merritt ParkwayNestled in the between the Long Island Sound, New York State, and New England to the north and east, Connecticut is a small gem of a state that manages to contain some of the best scenery in the country.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy what Connecticut has to offer, but here at Tire Country of Enfield, we’re partial to the scenic drive.

Since we’re in the heart of road trip season, we thought we’d share some of our favorite road trips, day trips, and scenic drives in Connecticut.

Connecticut State Route 169 National Scenic Byway

Running from Norwich in the southeastern portion of the state to Woodstock in the north, the Connecticut State Route 169 National Scenic Byway is a stretch of 169 that’s got some of everything Connecticut is known for—charming small towns, bucolic farmland, and plenty of vibrant foliage in the fall.

A portion of the route that runs through the town of Pomfret is also known as the Pomfret Street Historic District, which the National Register of Historic Places called “a picturesque and unique exemplar of Connecticut's resort and country estate period.”

The Merritt Parkway

Connecticut has a reputation for traffic—one that’s not always unfair. But things are different on Route 15, where commercial traffic is forbidden and commuters are a little less common than on big interstates like I-91 and I-84.

The portion of Route 15 between Milford and Greenwich is also known as the Merritt Parkway. Designated as a National Scenic Byway and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, there are few routes in Connecticut as nice as the Merritt. Expect plenty of tree cover (especially nice in autumn) and scenic views of coastal Connecticut. Continue south to get to New York City, or head north past Stratford to go through New Haven toward Hartford and points north.

A Taste of Litchfield Hills

Another name for parts of northeastern Connecticut along the New York and Massachusetts borders, the Litchfield Hills area is known for its rural charms, farmlands, lakes, and rivers.

Get a taste of the northwestern portion of the state by taking Route 202 between the towns of Litchfield and New Milford to its southwest. Stop and amble through any small towns you pass, or take a dip in Bantam Lake, between Litchfield and neighboring Morris.

Plenty More to See and Do

Of course, these are just a few of the Connecticut scenic drives available in our state. Use these as a starting off point, or do your own exploring to find your favorite day trips and routes.

If your car needs a little work before it’s in road trip shape, don’t worry! You can always take your next trip up to Tire County of Enfield in Enfield, CT. Offering a variety of auto repair and maintenance services, Tire Country will have you confident on the road in no time.
