How to Find a Reliable Mechanic for Your Vehicle

How to Find a Reliable Mechanic for Your Vehicle

Would you pick a doctor out of the yellow pages or off a search engine result without any recommendations? Some people might, but most people would take steps to ensure they choose a good one. They might look up the doctor’s qualifications or ask family and friends for a recommendation. Perhaps they’ll meet with the doctor for an initial visit to see if the relationship will work.

Choosing a mechanic should follow a similar course. Identifying a mechanic you can trust for your car should be about more than a quick Google search. According to Consumer Reports, there’s no single clue to what makes a good repair shop, but here are some things you should look for:

Find a shop that knows your brand of vehicle. Many garages specialize in certain makes. Those that focus on your type are more likely to have the latest training and equipment to fix your vehicle.

Ask your family and friends. Determine who has a vehicle like yours and ask for recommendations on service shops.

Check with the Better Business Bureau. Auto repair shops rank 12th on the bureau's list of common complaints, and you can often dodge a bad shop with a simple phone call or web site visit with the BBB in your area.

Search the Internet. Rating sites such as Yelp and Angie’s List are all be good resources. Cartalk.com provides their services for free, Angie's List requires a subscription, and the car repair estimator is free for Consumer Reports' online subscribers.

Check for certification. Be sure that the mechanic or shop you choose is certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence or ASE.

“Interview” the shop first. Ask about average repair times and schedules, how long they’ve been in business, and what guarantees they give on repair work. If something smells off, it may be time to look elsewhere. If it feels right, consider giving the shop a try with a small repair such as oil changes and filters before you hand them a large one.
