Why Getting Your Oil Changed is Vital

Why Getting Your Oil Changed is Vital

You know you’re supposed to get your oil changed regularly, but you’re not sure why. Sometimes, you think, mechanics and experts are exaggerating a bit when they emphasize regular oil changes…right?

Not at all, and here’s why: dirt is an enemy to vehicle engines. Over time, accumulating dirt can cause corrosion in the engine, decreasing its running efficiency as well as its lifespan. Think of oil as blood for your vehicle.

Here are some reasons why it’s so important to have regular oil changes.

Who wants sludge in their engine? Nobody. Routine oil and filter changes help remove particles that can congeal into sludge (yes…sludge) and prevent the engine from running in peak condition. Fresh oil helps reduce the accumulation of varnish and carbon from collecting on the engine, lubricating the working components while reducing the amount of friction between them.

Improve gas mileage. Poor engine lubrication resulting from infrequent oil changes can lead to increased fuel consumption, so it’s important to your wallet to ensure there is enough clean oil in the engine.

Prevent expensive engine damage. Oil changes do take some time and cost some money. However, in the long run, they will save you both money and time. If you wait too long, eventually the oil will get dirtier and thicker, and clog your vehicle’s engine. Engines are expensive to clean and replacing a worn-out piston will cost you far more than oil changes every few months. The bottom line is that it’s worth the time and minimal cost of maintenance to have regular oil changes.

So, how often should you change the oil, and what kind of oil should be used? That will depend on the type of oil you choose to use, what kind of vehicle you have, and how often and how far you drive. To get the most accurate answer, consult your vehicle’s owner's manual. While tradition dictates that the oil should be changed every three months or 3,000 miles, your situation and driving habits may require a different frequency.
