Winter Safety Tips For You and Your Vehicle

posted on

With six more weeks of winter ahead of us, there’s still a need to drive in the snow and ice to get to where we need to be. Keeping your car well-maintained is an important part of winter readiness, and good maintenance often changes with every season. There are several things drivers should remember to do during the winter months to keep their vehicles running at peak performance.

Check Your Battery

A dying battery can spell disaster on the road. Make sure that your battery is in good shape by having a volt test performed. It will give you peace of mind or give you a clue as to whether you need a new battery sooner rather than later.

Don’t Ignore the Coolant

The coolant in your vehicle is very important, but don’t let the name fool you. The purpose of coolant is two-fold; it keeps the water in your car from freezing in cold weather and keeps it from boiling and overheating in hot weather.

Fill’er Up

Keeping your fuel tank at least mostly full helps you in the winter for several reasons, the most important being a full tank will keep water from freezing inside your fuel pump. It will also help you stay warm by permitting the engine to run if you ever get stuck.

Run a Tire Pressure Check

Winter tires are usually more flexible during low temperatures, which can supply better traction when you want to stop on cold pavement, even in the absence of snow. Plus, your tires lose up to one pound per square inch of tire pressure with every 10-degree drop in the temperature. Your car is less predictable when your tires aren't inflated enough, so keeping up with your tire pressure is important.

Here at Tire Country, we want to ensure your safety on the road as we head into the last weeks of winter. In addition to keeping your car in check, be sure to always have an emergency kit in your car. Arm yourself with blankets, flashlights, a first-aid kit, and non-perishable food. Keep your mobile devices charged and, should you find yourself stuck on the road, contact us and stay safe this season.
