Why You Should Never Mix and Match Your Tires

Having good tires on your car is important. In addition to safety while on the road, good tires also mean savings at the pump and less wear and tear on other associated parts. Getting all new tires put on your car is an investment and you may consider cutting some corners to try to make it more affordable. Unless you’ve located some great manufacturer coupons on tires (we have those HERE!) We don’t recommend ever skipping this important step or doing something to sacrifice a safe ride.

One thing people may consider doing when it comes to tires is mixing and matching around the tires so they are not all the same. Tires don't just come from different brands but they also all have distinct sizes, tread patterns, load indexes, and speed ratings. When you start to switch or combine different tires it can be easy to make a costly or dangerous mistake.

The one time it is okay to have different tires on the front versus the back of your car is when your manufacturer allows for staggered tires in the setup. Still, in that very specific case, the tires will still be matched to their setting. It’s not the same as picking a bunch of used tires that still have tread someone is selling online and putting them on your car. We highly advise against this and here is why.

Poor Weight Distribution

You need the tires to be evenly matched to carry the proper load of your vehicle. When you mismatch tires you are also risking poor weight distribution and with this, your tires are going to wear out faster no matter what you try to do to keep them even and you’ll end up spending the same or more than you would have to just get a good new, matching tire from the beginning.

Pre-Mature Wear and Tear

As mentioned above, having non-matching tires will lead to needing to replace the tires sooner than normal. With tire rotations and regular pressure checks a new pair of tires can last up to 10 years depending on how much you drive and that’s well worth the investment.

Bad Handling / Performance

Your tires serve a very specific function on your vehicle. In addition to helping it move, they also take corners smoothly, assisting with turning the car in the direction you want to go and stopping as needed. With tires that don’t match, you can never tell just how good you’ll grip the road or if one of the tires is not equipped to properly handle the movement.
